the bare bones of it: three voices - new poetry
June 26th, 7.30pm
Professor Susan Tichy, Maoilios Caimbeul and Meg Bateman will all be reading at An Tuireann on one night under one roof in a one off special event on June 26th.Susan is Associate Professor, The Graduate Writing Program Department of English, George Mason University, USA. She will be reading from her new book of poems, Bone Pagoda, which began life in Scotland a few years ago. Susan's reading will mark a return journey and an opportunity for you to hear her work without crossing the pond!
The poems in Bone Pagoda are a personal journey through "Vietnam" -- the country, the war, and the moral catastrophe signified by this word in American memory. Take a journey to Vietnam through Susan's words and feel the many emotions that surround this country.
Meg Bateman will be reading from her long awaited third book Soirbheas: Fair Wind. Meg's poems are often intensely personal and give you a chance to travel into the mind of this highly talented writer. Speaking of her new book, Meg says the poems are 'more philosophical, but still marked by intense feeling and a restrained classical control'.
Born in Staffin, Skye, Maoilis Caimbeul has lived, at different periods, on Skye, Lewis and Mull. This will be the first time we can hear work from his time as writer in residence at Plockton High School; this includes his reply to one of Sorley MacLean's poems in Dàin do Eimhir/Poems to Eimhir: Gaoir na h Eòrpa: The Cry of Europe. He will be reading many of his other works which are internationally acclaimed and widely published.
As well as getting the opportunity to hear three poets in one evening out, you also get a chance to give a little back. All profits from the event will be going to Scottish PEN. Scottish Pen is part of International PEN, a dynamic worldwide association of writers pledged to protect freedom of expression and campaign on behalf of persecuted writers everywhere. Donations will be discretionary on the night - June 26th, 7.30pm!
The Ceilidh Spot
First Saturday of the month, 7.30pm
This is an opportunity to take the Ceilidh back to its original format - a social event where communities gathered to share stories and enjoy a wee dram or two. The aim of the event is to have a regular Saturday spot where people can come and read, sing, rant and recite just for the sheer enjoyment of it! Also, it will be an opportunity for people to practice reading in a group, experiment with formats, try out stuff, or share and exchange ideas or favourite authors.
